Growing pineapples at home is easy and rewarding! You can start with just the top (crown) of a store-bought pineapple. Here's how to do it:
Step 1: Select a Healthy Pineapple
-
Choose a ripe pineapple with healthy green leaves.
-
Avoid pineapples with brown, wilted, or damaged leaves.
Step 2: Prepare the Crown
-
Cut off the top (about 2 cm below the leaves).
-
Remove a few lower leaves to expose the stem.
-
Let it dry for 1-2 days to prevent rotting.
Step 3: Rooting the Crown
-
Place the crown in a glass of water (only the bottom should be submerged).
-
Change the water every few days.
-
Roots should start appearing in 2-3 weeks.
Step 4: Planting in Soil
-
Use well-draining soil (mix of sand, compost, and loamy soil).
-
Plant the crown in a pot or directly in the ground (if you have space).
-
Water lightly but don’t let the soil stay soggy.
Step 5: Growing & Care
-
Pineapples love sunlight, so place them in a sunny spot.
-
Water once or twice a week, depending on the weather.
-
Fertilize with organic compost or liquid fertilizer every month.
-
Watch out for pests like mealybugs or aphids.
Step 6: Harvesting
-
Pineapples take 18-24 months to produce fruit.
-
The fruit is ready when it turns golden yellow and smells sweet.
